A Word on Word Games: Beyond the fun of presenting a lighthearted competition that helps to keep my friends connected with each other, the Word Game is a chance to do something with the intricacies of language, both with the way it is read and with the way it sounds. Furthermore, because the Word Game does not exist in a vacuum, it's a good example of writing for an audience. Participants in the word game include doctors, lawyers, engineers, zoologists (yes, plural), and businessmen. Suffice to say, sometimes I get a lot of detailed feedback from this crew.

THE 2009 CHALLENGE:

Start the Games!

2009 Word Games
It was a fun year of puzzling, with eight rounds including common elements, spoonerisms, celebrity slurs, phonetic slurs, twisted song lyrics, esses, and some creative play with prepositions. You're invited to discover what comprises each of these tests—answers included, if you desire—by checking out the 2009 Challenge.

THE 2011 CHALLENGE:

2011 Word Games:
New games are now in progress for the 2011 season! On tap are tests involving alchemy, keywords, homonyms, geo-anagrams, word play, likely another round of common elements, and then whatever else I can conjure. I'll post completed games some time later, once they've been real-world tested.
